MARINE COMBAT TRAININGMarine Combat Training is meant to train entry-level, non-infantry Marines in the practical knowledge and skills of a basic rifleman so they can operate appropriately and effectively in a combat atmosphere. These entry-level Marines are given training in service rifle combat marksmanship, machineguns, grenade launchers, hand grenades, land navigation and map reading, basic patrolling strategies, offensive concepts, defensive fundamental principles, military operations in urban terrain, medical-related skills, communication skills, combat training, and Marine Corps morals and ethics training.

Marines will perform hikes that vary in distance from 5 Kilometers to 15 Kilometer in length while wearing combat loads. These distances are equivalent to 3.1 miles up to 9.3 miles.
Upon successful conclusion of the training, a Marine will be competent at serving as a basic rifleman in a combat environment. Marine Combat Training now makes use of every calendar day as a training day, meaning Marines will train each day they are at MCT. There are occasions when individuals will have liberty on Sunday, but this does not happen every cycle. Even when students receive a Sunday off from training, they'll likely either have fire watch or be advised to prep their equipment for the approaching 7 days of training in the field and on the ranges.
This course is intended for Privates through Lance Corporals that will serve in the Marine Corps or Marine Corps Reserves and hold non 03XX billets, meaning any MOS other than Infantry. Students must be a graduate of Recruit Training at one of the Marine Corps Recruit Depots, must be an active or reserve member of the Marine Corps, and must be physically capable of carrying out challenging combat-like physical activities. Both male and female Marines attend Marine Combat Training. This is different from Infantry Training Battalion, which only trains male Marines to earn the Infantry MOS.
A Marine must grasp every written and performance test to achieve mastery and graduate the course. Lack of ability to display mastery of a test on the Marine's primary attempt brings about the Marine getting guidance, remedial teaching, as well as an additional chance to exhibit mastery on that item. Failure to yet again demonstrate competence brings about more counseling and remediation, and a final attempt to demonstrate mastery. If the Marine fails to exhibit mastery after the third try, this constitutes an examination failure and requires that the Marine's effectiveness be re-evaluated by a Student Performance Board.
The Student Performance Board is comprised of Combat Instructors from the student's training company, and it reviews the Marine's all around training performance and makes a recommendation to the Commanding Officer regarding the Marine's possibility to carry on in the course. The CO holds discretion on the retention or dismissal of a Marine from the training.
At MCT Marines will learn all the basic skills of a Marine rifleman. They will NOT earn the MOS of an infantryman. Upon completion of Marine Combat Training Marines will be shipped to their follow-on MOS schools for training specific to the MOS they signed up for when they joined the Delayed Entry Program.
